CPL Conversation - Minimum Wage: What Makes Pay Fair?

Minimum wage laws are intended to establish a basic standard for pay, but people differ in how they think about wages, work, business costs, opportunity, and economic fairness. As workers, families, employers, and communities continue to navigate rising costs, the question of what makes pay fair remains relevant across the political spectrum.
At this meeting, we’ll explore how people think about minimum wage, the value of work, economic responsibility, and the role government should play in shaping wages.
We’ll ask questions such as:
- Do we need a nationwide minimum wage? Why or why not?
- How should the appropriate minimum wage be determined?
- What experiences have shaped the way you think about low-wage work or minimum wage jobs?
- What makes a wage fair: the work being done, the worker’s needs, the employer’s ability to pay, market forces, or something else?
- How should we think about the effects of minimum wage laws on workers, small businesses, prices, and local communities?
- What alternatives to a mandated minimum wage might help make pay fair?
- How might those alternatives work in practice?
people across the political spectrum might find common ground on the national debt?
This will be an opportunity to explore different perspectives on work, fairness, opportunity, and economic responsibility.
Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting. Once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open, and the doors close, approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
